Speed Up
Speed Up combines preloading, script deferral, minification, lazy loading, image work, and Critical CSS to improve storefront performance.
Start with a baseline
Review Mobile and Desktop scores and note LCP, TBT, CLS, and INP. Compare results over time using the same page and device profile. Lab scores can fluctuate, and Shopify real-user metrics update more slowly.
Choose a mode
- Basic: instant page preloading and CSS minification with minimal site impact.
- Standard: broader optimization for eligible plans.
- Turbo: more aggressive performance work for eligible plans.
- Rocket: the most extensive preset for eligible enterprise access.
- Custom: choose an individually tested strategy.
- Begin with Basic.
- Select Speed up now.
- Watch Running tasks and resolve any Critical or Failed step.
- Test navigation, product media, search, cart, variants, and checkout entry on mobile and desktop.
- Move to a stronger mode only after the current mode is stable.
Theme access and safe copies
The workflow may duplicate the current theme as a safety copy before changing theme files. If Shopify reports that theme duplication or write access is denied, the app cannot complete theme-level optimization. Review the error and required Shopify permissions before retrying.
Why scores may not change immediately
Google PageSpeed is affected by apps, theme code, third-party scripts, network conditions, and page content. Shopify RUM uses real visitor data and needs time to accumulate after deployment.
